Sustainable UX Database (Notion) https://lnkd.in/eyZjigBx As designers, we often are left wondering how to integrate sustainable practices into our design work. Most environmental impact happens on our user’s devices, so we can help our users by reducing waste. Typically, when we speak about sustainability, we mean at least 4 facets of it: 🌱 Reducing waste ← In publishing, heavy visuals, animation, PDFs, 🌻 Deleting content ← Un-publishing outdated, misleading content/flows, 🐝 Maximize reusability ← UI components, flows, processes, templates, 🌳 Sustainable defaults ← Help people make more sustainable choices. In practice, we could use simple but impactful design patterns: 1. Always prefer the lightest mode of communication. 2. Aim to reduce session duration instead of increasing it. 3. Encourage the reuse of existing templates and presets. 4. Auto-delete after 365 days what hasn’t been used once. 5. Discourage users from PDF exports in favor of URLs. 6. Always provide audio-only and transcript for videos. 7. Be intentional with default settings for your users. 8. Highlight key insights to create understanding faster. 9. Skip unnecessary pages: drive users to results faster. 10. Show filters/presets in autocomplete, not just keywords. 11. Nudge users to delete old files for 10% off that month. 12. Establish an archiving, deletion and clean-up policies. 13. Encourage and reward users for trying out dark mode. 14. Question font weights, stock photos, parallax, 4K-videos. 15. Question collected data, if it’s used and when it’s deleted. Individual actions can drive changes at scale. But they need a momentum. And momentum often comes through small changes: better defaults, reused filters and templates, reduced time on task. By following a structured approach, companies can ensure their commitments are robust, actionable, and globally relevant. Here’s a streamlined pathway for establishing effective sustainability goals. First, align with global standards. Anchoring sustainability goals to frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or the Paris Agreement places these efforts within a global context, signaling a commitment to shared challenges and providing a framework for tracking progress. The next step is conducting a materiality assessment. This process identifies the most critical environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues for the organization and its stakeholders. Focusing on these priorities directs resources toward areas with the greatest potential impact, ensuring the organization addresses what matters most. Setting SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—makes sustainability commitments clear and actionable. Finally, seeking external validation enhances credibility. Consulting with experts or using third-party assessments provides an objective review, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement. This validation builds stakeholder trust, showing a commitment to high standards. By following these steps, organizations can set credible sustainability goals that are both impactful and achievable.     "We ran a great kaizen event. We came back ninety days later, and people were doing the work the old way again." I've heard some version of that complaint for more than a decade. The usual diagnosis is often called "backsliding," so we reach for sustainment plans, audits, and more accountability. I think the diagnosis is usually wrong. A lot of what we call backsliding isn't that at all. The change was never actually adopted. There was nothing to slide back from. The new process was running in exactly one place: the event report. Or maybe the last day of the event. That distinction matters, because the two problems have different causes and different fixes. Treat an adoption failure like a sustainment problem and you build checklists, ask supervisors to enforce the standard, and get better at catching deviations. None of it touches the real issue: it's possible the people who run the work every day were never part of designing the change. They didn't take ownership of something they never got to shape. The improvements that hold share a few features. The people who do the work are in the room. The change gets piloted during the event week, not just mapped. There's a named owner for the weeks after, not "the team." And the supervisor's job shifts from enforcement to coaching. KaiNexus co-founder Greg Jacobson calls himself "the agitator," the person who slows the team down to ask whether they're about to slide back into the old comfortable way. When he sees a deviation, his first move is a question, not a correction. And it's worth separating two things that look alike: "I cannot do it that way" and "I will not do it that way." One is a barrier you can remove. The other is a choice that needs coaching, not authority. Improvements that are actually adopted don't need much sustainment.     How Can Sustainability Reshape Supply Chains? When you think about supply chains, do you see them as a system of endless transactions or a powerful avenue to drive sustainable impact? 🤔 I recently came across an insightful conversation with Steve Bernard, a CU Denver sustainability program alum with a decade of experience in supply chain management. His journey shows how sustainability isn’t a checkbox it’s a continuous path of collaboration, innovation, and improvement.     💡 One Small Kaizen… One Big Impact! Every organization wants higher productivity, lower costs, and better quality. But not every improvement requires automation or a large capital investment. During a wheat grain packing process, operators struggled to hold polyethylene bags while filling them. The task was time-consuming, physically demanding, and often resulted in grain spillage. Rather than accepting this as “the way we’ve always done it,” the team observed the process, identified the root cause, and developed a simple Kaizen tool to support the bag during filling. The outcome was remarkable: 📈 Reduced cycle time 🌾 Minimized grain spillage 💪 Improved operator ergonomics 🎯 Better packing consistency 📉 Reduced process waste 💰 Higher productivity with very low budget investment This is what Lean Manufacturing teaches us: The best Kaizen is not necessarily the most expensive one—it is the one that eliminates waste in the simplest way. When employees are encouraged to observe, think, and improve, every workstation becomes a source of innovation.     The Deming PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle is a continuous improvement process that helps organizations systematically solve problems and enhance processes. Let's break down each phase with the provided format: Plan (P) Problem Description 5W2H: A method to describe the problem comprehensively. What: What is the problem? Why: Why is it a problem? Where: Where does it occur? When: When does it occur? Who: Who is involved or affected? How: How does it manifest? How Much: How severe or significant is it? Problem Analysis Why-why analysis: A technique to identify the root cause(s) of a problem by repeatedly asking "why" until the fundamental issue is uncovered. Root Cause: The fundamental reason for the problem identified through analysis. Countermeasures: Actions proposed to eliminate the root cause(s) and prevent recurrence. Goal (Measurable) Current Condition: The present state or baseline metrics of the process or issue. Target: The desired state or outcome, often defined with specific, measurable criteria. Actual Value Achieved: The value or state achieved after implementing actions. Plan Time: The projected time frame for completing the planned actions. Actual Time: The actual time taken to complete the actions. Do (D) Containment Action (Immediate Action) Temporary measures taken to control the problem and prevent further issues while a permanent solution is being developed. Implementation (Long-Term Action) Execution of the countermeasures designed to address the root cause(s) and achieve the target goals. This includes allocating resources, assigning responsibilities, and ensuring proper communication. Check (C) Check/Test Parameters The specific metrics or parameters used to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented actions. Criteria of Checking The standards or benchmarks against which the results are compared. Frequency of Checking How often the checking or testing should be conducted to monitor progress. Responsibility The individuals or teams responsible for conducting the checks and reporting the results. Succeed Evaluation of whether the implemented actions have successfully resolved the problem and met the target goals. Act (A) Implementation Tasks for Established Standard New Standard Created: If the solution requires new procedures or standards, they are developed and documented. Existing Standard Updated: Existing standards are revised to incorporate the changes made to resolve the problem. The PDCA cycle is iterative, and after the "Act" phase, the cycle begins again with the next issue or opportunity for improvement.

    Without action, a Kaizen board is just decoration. It’s not the ideas that fail. It’s the follow-through that does. Teams love to talk about improvement. But talking is not doing. And doing without tracking is wasted. Why most Kaizen setups do not work: → No one owns the ideas → There is no follow-up process → Wins do not get shared across the team → Ideas sit idle in “in progress” → The board feels full but achieves little Here are some habits that make the board work: → Add owner photos to every idea → Show before and after photos to build belief → Block time weekly to review progress → Use color codes to clarify each stage → Share quick wins to keep morale high The board itself will not drive change. Your system and habits will. Kaizen needs more than just sticky notes and good intentions. It needs structure, ownership, and visibility. When people see: → Who is responsible → What progress looks like → How wins get recognized Then the board turns into a real driver of change. The magic is not in the tool.
