Fueled Up: Roman's Next Steps Before Launch

Technicians have finished fueling NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, one of the last major milestones before liftoff.

Launching nine months ahead of schedule, NASA and SpaceX are targeting liftoff for no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT Sunday, Aug. 30, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Next, technicians will attach Roman to the adapter that secures it to the rocket's upper stage. Then they'll secure it inside the payload fairing, the protective shell that will shield the telescope through launch.

Built to Face the Sun, Forever

The solar panels that will help power Roman will continuously face the sun during orbit.

Collectively called the Solar Array Sun Shield, each of the six panels is about 7 by 10 feet (2.1 by 3 meters) and will provide 4,100 watts to power the telescope as it gathers important data about exoplanets and other fundamental mysteries about how the universe works.
