Summary
The important thing is: they’re the last fight of today’s matches. Alexander has worked hard to rise up, gain favor and earn the best fights of the day. He’s a worthy opponent, and Henry hears their master say so often enough. Whenever gladiators are needed, Alexander’s name is always thrown into the ring, and he frequently visits the arena during the year. The emperor acknowledges both of the fighters and then they’re off, sparring with weapons, the clashing metal ringing in Henry’s ears as he sits on the edge of the bench, knuckles white where he grips the wood. Aurelia has taken on a similar position, and one hand flutters at her chest, like it grieves her to watch men fighting in such a manner despite being around it every day at the Ludus Magnus.
Or, the one where Henry is a house slave and Alex is a gladiator.

Summary
“Fetch me some wine, boy.” Titus’s voice is like gravel, thick and rough and sharp with his vexation.
The words cause Henry to hesitate – he’s got to get back to his master or there will be hell to pay. But if he tells Titus no, he has a feeling this isn’t going to end well for him, either. His master, however, could sell him on a whim, could completely rip apart his life and tear him from the one good thing that exists in his small life – Alexander. So he juts out his chin and steadily meets Titus’s gaze, tries to level the playing field between them as he squares off his shoulders and takes up some space.
“I’m not yours to command about, Titus. You know that.”

Henry, a house slave at the ludus magnus, runs into a spot of trouble when faced with one of the gladiators who lives and trains there. Alexander, a gladiator who Henry secretly meets most nights for an illicit love affair, is helpless to do anything to help Henry in the moment, lest he expose the true nature of their relationship. So he must offer comfort in the cover of night, long after the incident has occured.
