    The next big design challenge for the education sector? AI is breaking the bottom rungs of the career ladder—and the experience gap is on track to outpace the skills gap. This shift will likely feel gradual—until suddenly, it's not. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently warned that we need to stop sugar-coating what's coming. He's right. Look at what large language models are already good at: -Drafting code and writing first drafts -Handling customer service and high-volume information tasks -Generating ideas, conducting research, and synthesizing insights These tasks are exactly the entry-level knowledge economy jobs our education systems prepare students for. And now they're being automated away. Our education sector urgently needs scalable solutions to help students navigate a disappearing career ladder—and quickly. What could those look like? 1. Reorienting around applied careers: Jobs combining skill of mind and body—think healthcare, skilled trades, or Main Street entrepreneurship—are less susceptible to automation. 2. Integrating experience early: The experience gap will soon eclipse the skills gap. Apprenticeships, paid "learn-while-you-work" models, and other hands-on experiences should start as early as middle school. 3. Employers stepping up early: Companies may need to proactively invest in and hire talent ahead of immediate needs. The traditional hiring pipeline won't be sufficient when the bottom rungs vanish. It’s unclear whether this will make business sense—but many on the education side of the aisle will be rooting for it. This is our next big design challenge as an education sector.     The future of schools isn’t about better exams. It’s about whether we’re preparing kids for a world that won’t stand still. I recently revisited a set of education reports and one stat stopped me cold: 📊 Over 60% of classroom time globally is still spent on memorisation and standardised testing, even as AI systems can recall, summarise, and explain information instantly. That raises an uncomfortable question: 👉 If machines can remember everything, what exactly are we training children to do? Education has always been the engine of progress. But right now, it feels like we’re optimising for certainty in a world defined by constant change. As Alvin Toffler warned decades ago: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” That future has arrived. What’s breaking down Here’s the mismatch I keep seeing: • We teach answers, but the future rewards question-askers • We reward obedience, while the economy now values original thinking • We optimise for accuracy, but innovation is born from curiosity and iteration The World Economic Forum now lists critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, and problem-solving as top future skills, yet most school systems still measure success by recall under pressure. We’re shaping students for an economy of repetition, while the future belongs to people who can reframe, connect, and reinvent. What needs to change (practically) If education is going to stay relevant, the shift isn’t cosmetic, it’s structural: ✅ Teach how to think, not what to remember → Systems thinking, reasoning, and sense-making over rote learning ✅ Measure growth, not just grades → Progress, reflection, and learning velocity matter more than rank ✅ Normalise experimentation → Treat failure as feedback, not as a flaw ✅ Build transition skills → Moving between roles, tools, and contexts will define careers As John Dewey put it: “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” The real test ahead The future of education won’t be about passing exams. It will be about passing transitions. From: • one tool to the next • one role to the next • one industry to the next The question isn’t whether AI will change work, it already has.     AI isn’t just a tool — it’s a tectonic shift reshaping both work and learning. How will we respond? Can we be agile? These are the things “keeping me awake at night” as the interviewer might ask. Since the late 2022 launch of tools like ChatGPT, entry‑level job postings in the UK have apparently dropped by one-third, and AI-driven automation is eroding the “knowledge premium” that once justified high tuition and graduate salaries. In the Aspen Ideas Festival, Ford CEO Jim Farley warned that AI could replace literally half of all white-collar jobs within the next five years; a view echoed by Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, who forecasts a rise in unemployment to 10–20%. Education institutions now face a moment of truth: 1. The Scarcity of Knowledge Is Over AI has commodified information and universities can no longer rely on knowledge delivery alone; tuition must justify value beyond content. 2. Degrees Alone Don’t Cut It Hiring trends are shifting toward skill-based hiring: jobs in AI, green tech, and critical-thinking roles increasingly favor demonstrated capabilities over credentials. 3. The Stakes Are High If half of white-collar roles are genuinely at risk, we must pivot from delivering facts to cultivating judgment, creativity, ethics, and human-AI collaboration. What must universities and educators do? ✅ Reorient curricula for higher-order thinking Focus on ethical reasoning, complex problem-solving, and emotional intelligence; skills that AI struggles to replicate. ✅ Embed AI fluency across disciplines Students should master AI literacy and the ability to partner with intelligent systems; not view AI as competition. ✅ Reinvent assessments and credential models Move beyond rote exams. Use project-based, real-world evaluations and micro-credentials that signal concrete, job-relevant skills. ✅ Forge deep partnerships with industry Co-create curriculum and embed apprenticeships or internships to ensure graduates are AI-ready from day one. Are we ready to make these changes? Can we do it rapidly enough to future proof our students. I think we need to be bolder! This is my ambition for us at James Cook University and something I intend to keep pressing for.

    Districts across the country are feeling pressure to move fast on artificial intelligence, but speed without strategy can backfire. Done right, AI has the potential to expand opportunity and tackle persistent challenges in public education. Done wrong, it risks deepening inequities and wasting precious resources that the most vulnerable students need to close opportunity gaps. In the Center on Reinventing Public Education’s AI Early Adopter study, our researchers heard from dozens of district leaders working to strike the right balance, moving with urgency while staying grounded in equity, transparency and their core mission of educating students. According to those leaders, districts need to slow down and figure out what parents and families want in terms of preparing their children for the coming AI-based economy. They should also make sure AI efforts help marginalized students and track district progress to see if their plans are working. Gwinnett County Public Schools - began broad community engagement in 2017 and learned that families prioritized future-of-work readiness. The district used this to guide conversations on AI’s role in education, consulting industry leaders and experts and ultimately creating a districtwide plan for how the technology should be used. This included new K-12 AI literacy standards, an AI-focused high school and guidance to build literacy, address bias and privacy concerns and evaluate generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT. Santa Ana Unified School District - Jerry Almendarez -  formed a task force to explore how AI can support its Future-Ready Learning framework, instructional and equity goals, and mission of multicultural readiness. The result: an AI Compass that ensures the technology is used in accordance with districtwide values, like academic integrity and student well-being. Issaquah School District - Issaquah School District in Washington state employed AI to address persistent achievement gaps for students with disabilities, and those who identify as Latino or Hispanic and/or black or African American.

    In a rapidly evolving world, survival isn’t enough. How do we empower students to thrive? As an educator and a parent, I’ve been reflecting on how best to prepare the next generation—not just to adapt to change, but to lead it. Here's the approach I’ll recommend to my son when he turns 18. 1️⃣ Think Beyond Traditional Paths Higher education is valuable, but the four-year degree shouldn’t be the default. Microcredentials, online certifications, and hands-on industry experience can make students market-ready faster. The goal? Stay agile and continuously adaptable in a world where skills expire faster than ever. 2️⃣ Start Building Early A business doesn’t have to start as a grand venture. It could be a side hustle or a passion project that evolves over time. This is a chance to explore interests, test ideas, and find your Ikigai—the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, and what the world needs. 3️⃣ Take a Gap Year to Explore and Recharge The leap from K-12 to higher education can feel overwhelming. Taking time to travel, work, or simply enjoy life can offer invaluable lessons. It’s about gaining perspective, discovering passions, and setting a solid foundation for future decisions. 4️⃣ Focus on Tech and Soft Skills The future is digital, but emotional intelligence, adaptability, and communication will always be critical. Combining technical expertise with real-world soft skills ensures a well-rounded, future-ready individual. 5️⃣ Develop a Personal Brand In today’s interconnected world, building a personal brand is just as important as earning credentials. Understanding how to tell your story, leverage social media, and position yourself effectively is a skill that opens doors. What I won’t recommend is taking on thousands of dollars in student debt for a degree that may be obsolete by graduation. Education is no longer about ticking a box; it’s about staying curious, staying adaptable, and staying ahead. ☝ What are your thoughts on this approach?     Rethinking Business Education in a Techno-Civilisation Context We are living in what Yuval Noah Harari calls a techno-civilisation—an era shaped not by kingdoms or empires, but by data, algorithms, and machine intelligence. Key Challenges Facing Educators 1. Curriculum Obsolescence: In a world where knowledge is doubling every 12 months (and soon every 12 hours, as IBM once predicted), static syllabi risk becoming irrelevant before the semester ends. 2. The Rise of Generative AI: Tools like ChatGPT and Copilot force us to rethink not just assessment methods, but what constitutes learning. As Ethan Mollick of Wharton provocatively notes, “If your assignment can be done by AI, it probably wasn’t a great assignment to begin with.” 3. Cognitive Overload and Shallow Learning: Nicholas Carr’s The Shallows warns that digital immersion may erode our capacity for deep thinking. In business classrooms, attention is the new scarcity. 4. Ethical and Emotional Intelligence: As machines grow in capability, the human advantage lies in empathy, judgment, and values. Business educators must now prioritize wisdom over mere intelligence. An Emerging New Teaching Ethos: To stay relevant, educators must evolve from being content deliverers to learning designers—a shift also emphasized by David Garvin in his HBR classic “Educating the Next Generation of Leaders”. This means: • Integrating learning science: Embracing approaches that support reflection, active retrieval, and interdisciplinary synthesis. • Staying embedded in practice: Like Donald Schön’s “reflective practitioner”, educators must constantly learn from the field and bring that back into the classroom. • Embracing the co-learning model: The professor is no longer the sage on the stage, but a guide amid complexity—a role Alvin Toffler hinted at when he said, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” Looking Ahead: The Renewed Role of Business Schools Business education in a techno-civilisation must do more than prepare students to join the workforce—it must prepare them to shape the future of work itself. This means creating learning ecosystems that blend AI tools with ethical reasoning, simulations with storytelling, and analytics with empathy. In doing so, we move closer to Peter Drucker’s vision: not of business as profit maximization, but as a human endeavor to make society more productive, just, and sustainable.     “But this is how it’s always been done!” We have heard this so many times while working on curriculum development. And every time, it reminds me of why we need to pause, reflect, and challenge assumptions. The world is changing rapidly, and education must evolve with it. This is where 'First Principles Thinking' becomes a powerful tool. Not just for innovation, but for relevance. 💡 What is First Principles Thinking? Core of First Principles Thinking: Breaking down a problem into its most fundamental truths and rebuilding solutions from the ground up. Instead of tweaking old methods, it asks us to question the very foundations. For example, instead of asking, “How do we teach entrepreneurship better?” it asks, “Why do students need entrepreneurial skills in the first place?” This shifts the focus from outdated templates to solutions that address today’s challenges. 💡 Why is it important in Curriculum Development? The future of work is one of the biggest drivers of change in education. Automation, artificial intelligence, and the gig economy are reshaping careers. Students graduating today are stepping into a world where adaptability, creativity, and critical thinking are more important than ever. First principles thinking allows us to address these challenges head-on by asking fundamental questions: 👍 What skills truly matter for the future? 👍 Are our current methods helping students develop these skills? 👍 How can we design learning experiences that prepare students for a lifetime of growth? For instance, instead of assuming exams are the best way to measure learning, we might ask, “What do we want to assess: memorization, problem-solving, or creativity?” This question leads to assessments that are more aligned with real-world applications. 💡 How Can We Practice It? Here’s how First Principles Thinking to curriculum design: 1️⃣ Question deeply: While redesigning a STEM program, start with the question, “What do learners really need to succeed in the 21st century?” The answer wasn’t just technical knowledge. It's critical thinking, adaptability, collaboration, and resilience. This will shift the focus to project-based learning and real-world problem-solving. 2️⃣ Break it down: For rural audiences, strip away assumptions like “students need to learn problem-solving skills” and instead ask, “What do students need to solve challenges in their communities?” This will lead to practical, localized, relatable content. 3️⃣ Rebuild for relevance: While creating a leadership curriculum, ask, “How can students lead in a world increasingly shaped by AI?” The result will be emotional intelligence, ethical decision-making, and digital literacy activities. First principles thinking isn’t just about breaking things apart but it’s about rebuilding with purpose.     “Future skills frameworks talk a lot about skills for the future, but almost never about skills for dealing with the future.” Jan Oliver Schwarz identifies a blind spot. Critical thinking, adaptability, creativity, and collaboration matter, but we must ensure the skills we develop support employability across multiple plausible futures. And we must also prepare people to systematically explore those futures. This means being able to: • Identify and understand the implications of weak signals • Conceptualize and learn from multiple possible futures • Challenge assumptions • Become more comfortable with uncertainty These skills help leaders and institutions make better decisions today. If we only prepare people to adapt to change, we leave them reactive. If we prepare them to work with the future, we build agency.     By Fall 2026, every four-year university will face the same reality: 👉🏻Students will expect AI-enabled learning. 👉🏻Faculty will expect AI-supported teaching and research. 👉🏻 Employers will expect AI-ready graduates. 👉🏻Boards and stakeholders will expect an institutional AI strategy. The question is no longer whether universities should adopt AI. The question is: Is your institution prepared to do it responsibly, strategically, and at scale? In my work with higher education, I see many institutions experimenting with AI tools, but fewer are building the foundations needed for sustainable success. That's why I developed a framework around the Four Pillars of Responsible AI in Education: 🏛️ Evaluate AI Readiness Across the Institution 🛡️ Strengthen Risk Management, Governance, and Ethical Standards 🎓 Develop an AI-Fluent Educator and Student Workforce 🚀 Invest in Innovation to Scale High-Impact AI Use Cases Universities that act now will be positioned to lead.
