The Great Mental Models: Economics and Art: Economics and Art
Purchase options and add-ons
A cult bestseller in the US, available around the world for the first time, The Great Mental Models introduces the simple tools we all need to see the world clearly.
Time and time again, great thinkers like Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger have credited their success to mental models: simple representations of how the world works that can be applied in a wide array of contexts. Mastering a small number of these concepts enables you to rapidly grasp new information, identify patterns others don’t, and better anticipate outcomes.
The Great Mental Models introduces the most powerful models that anyone can use right away to improve decision making and productivity. In this volume, Shane Parrish introduces key concepts that both art and economics rely on, including:
- Creative destruction: New innovations must sometimes come at the cost of the maintaining the status quo.
- Representation: The depiction of an idea can be visual, but it can also rely on symbols or other ideas.
- Genre: A form of communication with socially constructed norms developed collaboratively over time.
Building a latticework of mental models is one of the most powerful things you can do to become a better thinker, leader, or creator. The Great Mental Models is the accessible guide you need to unlock this ability.

Still Golden Content, Less Premium Feel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 December 2024I loved the content but they changed the books and the quality is much poorer than the older editions and it doesn't have as much personality as a book compared to the old ones. It's just a nit pick as the content itself is still golden.

Quality of the book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 October 2024I haven't read the book in it's entirety but I'm enjoying the content that I've read so far.
The reason for the three stars is due to the poor quality of the book itself. Volume 1 was fantastic, it had images, crisp pages, I really thought it offered value. This book uses what appears to be recycled paper, for the price I've paid, I expected better. Also, I feel as though they set a precedent with the previous book and consequently I expected the quality to be the same.
I have to say I'm disappointed overall. I feel it's over-priced.

Why the change?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2024I have the first three volumes. Quality books and a quality set with excellent ideas and lessons.
This fourth book not only doesn't match the others in form - looking frankly ridiculous next to the uniform first three - but the quality is also well off, with thin pages, much less visual appeal and lacking the excellent dividers.
The words may well be as meaningful but presented like this - in a book looking at artistic models no less - diminishes the message.

Wang Yip3 out of 5 starsGood content, change in form
Reviewed in Canada on 23 October 2024Like the others, not particularly happy that the first three volumes are red and a large size and this one is blue and a smaller size. I understand all the volumes have been updated but at least keep it the same and maybe bundle the new ones together.
Content likely similar to the other. I enjoy learning about mental models and their applications to life.

Pip Boy2 out of 5 starsGood content. Poor book quality
Reviewed in Singapore on 3 January 2025Shane and his blog, Farnam Street, have always been a favorite of mine. I purchased this edition print because I’m a huge fan of the first edition. However, I’m disappointed with the quality of the print and paper. I understand that keeping costs low is important, but the pages were printed crookedly, and most of the illustrations from the first edition are missing. (I assume they’re sticking to black and white printing to keep costs down.) Despite these issues, I still love the content, but the crooked pages were a major distraction.

Vijay5 out of 5 starsThe content, as expected, is awesome
Reviewed in India on 19 November 2024The content is superb, continuing the brilliant standard set by the first three volumes. The whole set is an intellectual treasure.
However, extremely disappointed to see the smaller and completely different format - the set is no longer a set unless you repurchase the first three volumes. That is not worth it.
